Unlike many aerial photographers in Northern Ireland and Great Britain, we fully understand the Civil Aviation Authority Rules and Regulations that govern the use of aircraft for aerial photography. Believe us, it is not just a case of getting a ride in an aircraft, it’s alot more complex than that.
In fact we make it a priority to ensure that we know the law and ensure that it is fully complied with at all times.
Many photographers who offer aerial photography as a service fail to comply with these rules and regulations. Their failure could have a direct consequence on you if something went wrong or the Civil Aviation Authority did a spot check.
We compare aerial photography with a taxi service (strange you may think, but read on). If you want to get from A to B you can either use a licenced taxi (operated by a reputable company or person that has all the correct insurances, a car that is regularly inspected, a qualified driver who knows the law).
Or you can get an unlicenced taxi (standard car insurance, a car not regularly inspected, a driver who doesn’t have the correct licence). Both will get you from A to B, the licenced one will no doubt cost more as they comply with the law.
Ask yourself this what would happen if something went wrong when you used the licenced taxi. You would have the comfort knowing that the company/individual complied with the law fully.
If you used the unlicenced taxi, who knows what would happen if something went wrong, the driver’s insurance company certainly wouldn’t pay up.
I will be the first to admit, we are not always the cheapest compared to other companies that provide similar services, but then you can’t really compare our costs to such companies as we do not take risks with flouting the law.
We are also not one of those firms that charge silly prices. Yes, I have heard of companies quoting silly prices for one off photographs (£99 for ground based aerial photography or £150 for one taken from an aircraft) anywhere in Northern Ireland.
Stop and ask yourself what kind of professional service are you getting in return. Especially if I told you that if you wanted to hire a suitable aircraft yourself it would cost you in excess of £450 per hour.
